Statue of Martin Luther King in Kelly Ingram Park, Birmingham

I hear incredible things about the leaders of the Civil Rights Movement, and what has always amazed me is how people organized to fight injustice and inequality. They shared a communal vision of a different world. They worked together to change our world. Many are not named in history books, but their work is seen everyday in our lives.

Unfortunately the prophet who we remember today never saw the Promised Land. We haven’t made it to the Promised Land either. Our society still has a long way to go on issues of equality. We can’t lose sight of the dreams and visions of those who came before us. When movements and great thinkers leave behind incredible dreams they inspire people for generations to come.

Today I hope we take the time to honor not only Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. but also everyone who participated in, supported, and prayed for the Civil Rights Movement.  May their work never be taken for granted. May we carry on their spirit in word and deed to work for true equality in America. The Civil Rights Movement continues with every person who works for racial equality.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
-Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
